Starting Zero Waste Living
Starting your zero waste journey can be really overwhelming and can have you thinking that you need to go out and buy all of the zero-waste products on the market. But where do you start? What do you really need?
Some people will go room by room, some people will just go all out and some will take it slow.
At Wholesome Living Co, we believe in taking it slow.
The first thing to consider is that we don’t want to create more waste in our attempts to reduce our waste.
What do we mean by this?
We know the use of plastic is not ideal - the way it’s created and disposed of is one of many things that is ruining our earth and hurting our wildlife. But this doesn’t mean that you should just go throwing it all out and replacing it with an eco-friendly substitute instead.
For example - if you have perfectly good plastic containers in your Tupperware cupboard, keep using these until they are ready to be thrown out and then replace it with an eco-friendly option.
If you only just opened a tube of toothpaste or a bottle of body wash then use these up before you buy toothpaste pellets or bars of soap.
Here are our favourite things to swap out first on your zero waste journey.
Reusable shopping bags
These are so handy when you’re out and about. Bring them with you when you hit the shops so you don’t need to take home extra plastic with you! Keep a couple in your car so that you don’t get caught out during those spur of the moment shopping trips!
Reusable travel mugs
Great for those who love coffee on the go! Take your travel mug with you when you head out in case you stop off for a delicious brew - these bad boys stop all those extra plastic lids from heading to the landfill and some cafes will even give you a discount for bringing your own mug - if your local cafe does this, your mug will basically pay for itself!
Insulated drink bottles
The number of single use plastic bottles making their way towards the landfill is absolutely astounding. Incorporating an insulated drink bottle into your lifestyle is a great way to reduce your single-use plastic AND these drink bottles can keep your water cold (or hot if you’d prefer) for up to 24 hours!
Helpful tip from someone who once made this mistake - remember to put cold water in the bottle or whack some ice cubes in there; if you put in room temp water and pop it in the fridge, it will take hooooooouuuurrrrs to cool the water. The insulated bottles are really great at keeping whatever is inside protected from the elements!
Ditch the plastic knives and forks for good! If you like to grab take out on the regular (or even if it’s once in a while) keep a pack of reusable cutlery in your bag!
Reusable produce bags
How many times have you grabbed a plastic bag in the produce section and it’s ripped as soon as you put your food in them?! Next time you hit up the supermarket, make sure you cart along reusable produce bags! These are such a great way to reduce your single-use plastic waste and can help to keep your fruit and veggies fresher for longer! Pop a few in the car so you don’t get caught out when you drop into the shops!
Everyone leads a completely different lifestyle and will find that some products work for them whilst others don’t. Every little step we take is helping to keep our waterways safe and help our Earth! Implementing some of these ideas within your day to day life is a great start to reducing your waste and in turn, help to save our planet!
